John Skoog's Redoubt: Film and Exhibition at Moderna Museet Malmö

John Skoog's feature film 'Redoubt' (2025) and its accompanying exhibition at Moderna Museet Malmö explore the story of Karl-Göran Persson, a Swedish farmhand who built a bunker from scrap metal and concrete from the 1940s until his death in the mid-1970s. The film, shot in black-and-white, stars Denis Lavant as Karl-Göran, who mumbles 'War is coming' while constructing the redoubt. Skoog, born in 1985 in Skåne, Sweden, fabricated a replica of Persson's bunker for the film, which is now displayed in the museum's former turbine hall. The exhibition runs through 17 May. Skoog's earlier short 'Reduit' (2014) won the Baloise Art Prize and documented the original bunker. The film draws on influences like Paul Virilio's 'Bunker Archeology' and André Bazin's cinema-cathedral analogy. Skoog's work also includes 'Shadowland' (2015), 'Late on Earth' (2011), and 'Ridge' (2019), all set in rural Sweden and dealing with themes of faith, paranoia, and the otherworldly.
