John Singer Sargent's First Swedish Retrospective Opens Renovated Nationalmuseum

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Nationalmuseum in Stockholm has reopened after extensive renovations with the first monographic exhibition of John Singer Sargent in Sweden. The show, running until January 13, 2019, aims to introduce the American painter to Scandinavian audiences. Curated to provide both a broad overview and deep dives into specific themes, the exhibition explores Sargent's relationship with Nordic art, particularly his stylistic affinity with Swedish painter Anders Zorn. Works are loaned from major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Tate, National Gallery London, and Musée d'Orsay. The renovation, guided by director Susanna Pettersson, restored natural light by reopening windows, reinstated original color schemes by architect Friedrich August Stüler, and now displays over 5,000 works spanning six centuries, integrating Swedish and international art and design. New amenities include a restaurant with city views, a redesigned shop, and a Children's Museum. The museum aims to attract diverse audiences through free admission to collections and targeted programs for families, schools, new immigrants, and groups with special needs. Future plans include research on Nordic female sculptors from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
