John Morgan, influential designer and typographer, dies at 52
John Morgan, a renowned graphic designer and typographer who revamped ArtReview in 2013, passed away on 2 September 2025 at the age of 52. He was born in 1973 in a village in Lancashire and pursued his studies in Typography & Graphic Communication at Reading University. After a stint at Derek Birdsall's Omnific studio, he established John Morgan studio in 2000. His notable projects included a new edition of Common Worship for the Church of England, the graphic identity for the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale, and signage for Tate Britain. In 2016, he took on the role of Professor für Entwurf, Typographie und Buchkunst at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and co-founded the type foundry Abyme with Adrien Vasquez in 2017. His redesign of ArtReview added 5mm in width, utilizing Bram de Does' Lexicon typeface, and he remained an advisor until 2022.
