John Hitchcock mid-career retrospective at New Britain Museum of American Art

From May 16 to November 29, 2026, the New Britain Museum of American Art will host 'John Hitchcock: We are Defined by the Beat,' marking the first mid-career retrospective for the artist. Born in 1967, John Hitchcock is part of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and also has Comanche and Northern European roots. For over three decades, he has channeled the cultural and rhythmic essence of his heritage into his artwork. His pieces blend personal stories with influences from intertribal powwows, the Wichita Mountains where he grew up, and symbols from Great Plains Native cultures. Through various mediums like printmaking and installation, Hitchcock pays tribute to his ancestors, while also tackling the narratives of Indigenous trauma and resilience.
