John Galliano and Jessi Reaves collaborate at Maison Margiela

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Fashion designer John Galliano (Gibraltar, 1960) and American artist Jessi Reaves (Portland, 1986) have collaborated on a runway show in Paris at the Maison Margiela headquarters. Galliano told the New York Times that upon first seeing Reaves's work at the French fashion house, 'the world started to go in slow motion' and he insisted on meeting her so his clothes could be seen among her creations. He describes Reaves as a 'soul sister' with an exhilarating energy and a unique approach similar to his own, noting their shared passion for objet trouvé. Reaves created four site-specific sculptures for the show, starting from Cesca chairs by Marcel Breuer and Noguchi coffee tables, which she covered in fabrics to be used during the runway presentation. These works are not merely aesthetic but become functional objects used by people. The article also discusses broader fashion-art collaborations: Louis Vuitton under Marc Jacobs invited Richard Prince, Yayoi Kusama, and Takashi Murakami to design successful bag collections; a later collaboration between LVMH and Jeff Koons sparked controversy, with some calling the bags kitsch. D&G's autumn-winter 2013-2014 collection looked to Sicilian art, specifically the mosaics of Monreale, celebrating southern Italian traditions and craftsmanship.
