John Fante (born in Boulder, 1909 – died in Los Angeles, 1983) is celebrated for his portrayal of the Italian-American immigrant journey through his fictional character, Arturo Bandini, in titles such as "Wait Until Spring, Bandini" (1938) and "The Road to Los Angeles" (1985). His early pieces were published in the Atlantic Monthly during the mid-1930s, earning acclaim from notable authors like Charles Bukowski, J.D. Salinger, and John Updike. Fante's narratives capture the essence of 1930s Los Angeles, particularly Bunker Hill, and introduce intricate female figures such as Vera Rivken and Camilla Lopez in "Ask the Dust."
