John Bulmer's 1960s England Photos in Romagna Brewery

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition 'North Faces. L’altro volto dell’Inghilterra degli Anni 60' brings for the first time to Italy the work of British photojournalist John Bulmer (Herefordshire, 1938), a pioneer of color reportage. Curated by Silvia Camporesi, the show is hosted at Mazapégul, an artisanal brewery in the Romagna hills (Civitella di Romagna, FC). Twenty-six photographs depict industrial, foggy northern England—Manchester, Liverpool, Halifax—contrasting with the glamorous Swinging London image. Bulmer, a young contributor to the Sunday Times, documented working-class life: women in headscarves, pub after-work scenes, children playing in streets. His use of color is distinctive, softening chromatic intensity through opaque fog and diaphanous light to convey humidity and cold. The exhibition runs from October 2 to November 12, 2022, with free admission.
