John Baldessari Transforms Giacometti's Grande Femme into Fashion Mannequins at Fondazione Prada

exhibition · 2026-04-20

For Fondazione Prada in Milan, John Baldessari crafted nine sculptures that reinterpret Alberto Giacometti's Grande Femme Debout series as fashion mannequins. This exhibition took place from 29 October to 26 December 2010 in a space designed by Rem Koolhaas. Baldessari enlarged Giacometti's original 3-meter bronzes to 4.5 meters using a resin resembling bronze and created 18 outfits for them. The sculptures were displayed in a runway layout, with their clothing changed twice throughout the event. Commissioned by Germano Celant, the director of Fondazione Prada, Baldessari's work reflects on modern culture. Giacometti's original pieces were commissioned in 1960 for the Chase Manhattan Bank plaza. The installation also featured characters like Rapunzel and Joan of Arc, with all couture produced in Italy.
