John and Caroline Laws collection gifted to Art Gallery of New South Wales

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-27

A significant contribution of Australian art has been made to the Art Gallery of New South Wales from the collection of the late broadcaster John Laws CBE and his spouse, Caroline Laws. This donation features ten pieces, among which are four paintings by John Russell, the sole Australian artist linked to renowned late 19th-century French figures such as Auguste Rodin, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri Matisse. Additionally, the collection includes two notable works by Rupert Bunny, a prominent Australian expatriate, along with pieces by lesser-known female artists: a watercolour depicting the Sydney Harbour Bridge by Adelaide's Gwen Barringer and an oil study of gum blossoms. Previously showcased in the couple's residence, this collection is now integrated into the gallery's permanent holdings.
