Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter: Danish Duo Wins Awards for Landscape Interventions

Danish firm Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter (JSA), founded in 2014 by Søren Johansen (b. 1981) and Sebastian Skovsted (b. 1982), has gained rapid recognition for transforming rural sites in Denmark. The duo participated in the 2019 exhibition "Alternative Histories" organized by Drawing Matter and the Architecture Foundation in London, where 80 European studios recreated drawings as models. JSA's key projects include converting three pumping stations along the Skjern River into exhibition spaces with gray-painted wooden additions, earning them the Danish royal One Star award for talent of the year and a finalist spot for the AR Emerging Architecture Award 2017. In the Tipperne nature reserve, they built three mono-material structures—a steel observation tower, a corten shelter, and a wooden lab—making the bird sanctuary accessible to the public. This work earned them Highly Commended Practice at the AR Emerging Architecture Award 2018. After five years of public-sector work, JSA is now taking on commercial and private clients, designing housing, offices, and industrial warehouses from their Copenhagen studio.
