Johann le Guillerm's Transumante at Festa di Roma

other · 2026-05-04

French artist Johann le Guillerm presented his architectural performance 'La Transumante' on January 1, 2019, at Lungotevere dei Pierleoni in Rome, as part of Fondazione Romaeuropa's Festa di Roma program. The work is a moving installation made of 160 three-meter-long sticks that interlock without screws or bolts, forming a monumental and metamorphic structure manipulated by ten people. Le Guillerm, who comes from a circus background, describes the piece as part of a broader research project called the 'Observatory on the minimal,' which he began in 2001. This research focuses on irreducible primary forms, leading to the development of 'archi-texture' structures that stand through the art of interlocking alone. The first iteration of La Transumante was created for Nuit Blanche in Paris in 2014. After Rome, the work was scheduled to travel to the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The performance emphasizes the relationship with the audience, who witness the constant construction and deconstruction of the structure, which moves slowly like desert dunes. Le Guillerm likens himself to a 'shepherd of sticks,' and the piece can reach up to 200 square meters in area and 4 meters in height.
