Joel Meyerowitz's Street Photography on View at Leica Store Milan

A selection of fifty photographs by American street photographer Joel Meyerowitz (New York, 1938) is on display at the Leica flagship store in Piazza Duomo, Milan. The exhibition, curated by Denis Curti and Maurizio Beucci, draws from Meyerowitz's extensive archive spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. Meyerowitz, who spends much of the year in Tuscany, is known for his pioneering use of color photography at a time when many peers dismissed it as too commercial. The show includes iconic images such as 'Wyoming, 1964' and 'New York City, 1974,' as well as lesser-known black-and-white works. The prints were originally acquired by Leica for the Galerie Wetzlar, where they were first exhibited after Meyerowitz received the Leica Hall of Fame Award in 2016. Curti notes that Meyerowitz trusted the curators completely, only intervening in a couple of personal invitations. The installation juxtaposes color and black-and-white images, particularly in the New York section, reflecting Meyerowitz's belief that storytelling matters more than format. The exhibition highlights Meyerowitz's use of a Leica 35mm camera, which he described as a 'dowsing rod' guiding him through crowds. Curti characterizes Meyerowitz as an 'explorer' rather than a pioneer, someone who adapted his perspective to each city he photographed. The show runs at Leica Store Milano in Piazza Duomo.
