Joe Brainard's Rare Matchbook Miniatures at Chris Sharp Gallery
The Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles is hosting its second solo show featuring Joe Brainard (1942–1994), which includes a previously unseen collection of matchbook miniatures from 1975. These pieces consist of collages and paintings created on open matchbooks, highlighting Brainard's unique approach to materials and his talent for elevating ordinary items into art. The themes depicted range from two matches in bed to a sandwich adorned with a postage stamp and milk, as well as a moonscape featuring an Egyptian sphinx. Brainard's works have been displayed at MoMA P.S.1 and the Berkeley Art Museum, and are part of prestigious collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is also recognized for his 1970 book I Remember and the compilation The Collected Writings of Joe Brainard (Library of America, 2012).
