Jodie Foster Receives Cannes Palme d'Or from Pedro Almodóvar

During the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Jodie Foster received the honorary Palme d'Or in recognition of her illustrious career. This event occurred on the festival's red carpet, marking 45 years since she first ascended the steps for Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver in 1976. The award was presented by Pedro Almodóvar, who lauded Foster's remarkable choices as both an actress and a director. In her acceptance speech, which she delivered flawlessly in French, Foster expressed her appreciation and reflected on how cinema served as her lifeline during the pandemic lockdown. Previous recipients of this honor include Jeanne Moreau, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Jane Fonda. Foster, a former child star, has acted in around 50 films, directed four, and won two Academy Awards for The Accused (1989) and The Silence of the Lambs (1992). Her latest role was in The Mauritanian, for which she earned a Golden Globe as lawyer Nancy Hollander defending Mohamedou Ould Slahi. She donned a white silk cady gown adorned by Givenchy. Thierry Frémaux, the festival's general delegate, commended her ability to continually reinvent herself, emphasizing her importance in a tumultuous era.
