Jocelyn Mathewes: Para(site)dise at William King Museum of Art

William King Museum of Art (WKMA) in Abingdon, Virginia, will present Jocelyn Mathewes: Para(site)dise from August 20, 2026, to January 10, 2027, in the United Company Contemporary Regional Gallery. The exhibition features Mathewes' work across photography, assemblage, paper sculpture, and video, all centered on illness and corporeality. Her practice explores how chronic illness is navigated daily, the societal expectations of strength, and the lack of accommodation for disabilities. Mathewes uses cyanotype prints, quilting, and paper folding to mirror the labor of caregiving. The region, like much of Appalachia, faces pollution, addiction, and disability struggles that inform her themes.
