Joaquín Torres García's 150th Anniversary Celebrated with Major Exhibition at CCBB São Paulo
An important exhibition at CCBB São Paulo commemorates the 150th birthday of Joaquín Torres García, a trailblazer in decolonial art from Uruguay. Entitled 'Joaquín Torres García – 150 anos', the showcase presents more than 70 pieces, documents, and writings, curated by Saulo di Tarso in collaboration with the Museu Torres García. The exhibition emphasizes the artist's concepts, divided by the Treaty of Tordesillas line, highlighting its relevance today. Renowned for his 1943 piece 'América Invertida', Torres García integrated geometric abstraction with pre-Columbian influences. It features works from over 70 artists, including Arthur Bispo do Rosário and Hélio Oiticica. Many significant works were lost in a 1978 fire, with the majority sourced from the Museu Torres García. The exhibition will also tour Brasília and Belo Horizonte.
