João Ribas named new REDCAT executive director at CalArts

institutional · 2026-05-01

João Ribas has been named the executive director of the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in Los Angeles, marking him as the second individual to hold this position since the center's establishment 17 years ago. He will also take on the role of vice president of cultural partnerships, effective June 1. Ribas was chosen by a selection committee that included faculty members, CalArts provost Tracie Costantino, and board chair Tim Disney. Previously, he was the curator and commissioner for the Portuguese Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale and directed the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto until his resignation in late 2018 following the censorship of a Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition. Tim Disney expressed optimism that Ribas will enhance CalArts’ influence through various programs and community collaborations. Additionally, Edgar Miramontes has been appointed as deputy executive director of REDCAT.
