Joana Vasconcelos unveils Gateway, a colorful pool at Jupiter Artland in Scotland

On July 28, 2019, during the Edinburgh Art Festival, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos (born 1971 in Paris) inaugurated Gateway, a new installation at Jupiter Artland, one of Scotland's most significant art foundations located near Edinburgh. The installation is a nine-meter-long pool with a vibrant, multicolored bottom, its walls covered with 11,366 hand-painted and glazed tiles produced in collaboration with Viúva Lamego, a century-old ceramic factory in Lisbon, and Atelier Vasconcelos. The mosaic design features dynamic lines that the artist describes as energy channels connecting the earth and sacred sites worldwide. Vasconcelos stated that Gateway invites the public to immerse themselves in a joyful and lively dimension, acting as a threshold to another universe. The pool became accessible to visitors starting in August 2019. Jupiter Artland's sculpture park also features works by Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley, Christian Boltanski, and Marc Quinn.
