Joana Sousa Monteiro on Museums as Creative Catalysts for Citizenship

In an interview for the Open Doors cycle at Brescia Musei, Joana Sousa Monteiro, director of the Museu de Lisboa, argues that museums must actively stimulate creativity to strengthen cultural democracy. She asserts that creativity should be embedded in all museum programs—exhibitions, tours, talks, family activities—through inclusive, innovative, and empathetic communication. Technology (audioguides, 3D video, VR, AR) can enhance engagement but must remain a means, not the end. Museums naturally collaborate with public institutions, schools, community groups, and researchers to develop participatory programs. Different age groups require tailored approaches, but creativity is equally important for children and adults. At the Museu de Lisboa (owned by the municipality and managed by EGEAC), programs target diverse audiences including people with dementia, infants and parents, and those with mental disabilities. One recent project, Spot the Place – Encontros ao Museu, supports small groups of adults with dementia and their caregivers, in partnership with a health researcher and the National Alzheimer's Association, focusing on memory, sense of place, and well-being. Initial results have been positive and emotionally moving.
