Joan Miró's sculptures at Renzo Piano's Centro Botín in Santander

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Centro Botín in Santander, designed by Renzo Piano, hosts a major exhibition of Joan Miró's sculptures, featuring around 100 works created between 1928 and 1982. Curated by María José Salazar and Joan Punyet Miró, the artist's grandson, the show aims to reveal the contemporary relevance of Miró's three-dimensional practice. It includes loans from MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Museo Reina Sofía, and numerous public and private collections. Notably, 45 of the 94 sculptures are displayed alongside the original found objects used by Miró—such as wicker baskets, nails, pots, bottles, baby strollers, chairs, and cardboard boxes—many restored for the occasion. Also on view are 26 preparatory sketches and 32 vintage photographs showing Miró with his prototypes. The exhibition traces Miró's creative process, highlighting his use of everyday materials and his collaboration with the Fonderia Fratelli Bonvicini in Caselle di Sommacampagna, near Verona, which cast many of his bronzes in the 1970s and 1980s. Miró, born in Barcelona in 1893, worked in wood, iron, plaster, and bronze, often incorporating bones, stones, and other found objects. The show runs until September 2.
