Joan Fontcuberta and Paolo Gioli in Dialogue at Galleria del Cembalo, Rome
Galleria del Cembalo, a rare private photography space in Rome, presents a two-person exhibition pairing Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) and Paolo Gioli (Rovigo, 1942), curated by Fontcuberta. The show combines six series by each artist, exploring themes of photographic documentality and archival sustainability. Both share an experimental, deconstructive approach but maintain distinct research programs. Highlights include homages to Nicéphore Niépce and anatomical re-montages, as well as Fontcuberta's series 'Deletrix' on censored ancient codes. Roberta Valtorta notes in her presentation that what unites them is not a similar cultural path or generational belonging, but a constant desire to intimately investigate the logic of the photographic device. The exhibition is held in the frescoed halls overlooking a nymphaeum inside Palazzo Borghese.
