Jo Baer, Anne Neukamp, and Diane Simpson explore near-representation at Mitchell-Innes & Nash
From December 13, 2014, to January 24, 2015, Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York showcased a three-artist exhibition featuring Jo Baer, Anne Neukamp, and Diane Simpson. This exhibition examined the ways in which familiar subjects can be altered or displaced. Diane Simpson's 2011 piece, Neckline (extended), utilized fiberboard and aluminum to form geometric shapes. Anne Neukamp's 2014 work, Insert, depicted a red hand gripping an angled metal armature. Jo Baer's triptych, Facing, Turning (Intro/About), Cleaving (Apart/Together) (1978-79), presented earthy shapes reminiscent of ancient cave art. Simpson's 1992 Mesh Bonnet reimagined functional items as sculptures, while Neukamp's 2014 Crook created intriguing spatial paradoxes, emphasizing the formal connections among the artists.
