Jiří Skála Wins 2009 Jindřich Chalupecký Award in Prague Exhibition

The 2009 Jindřich Chalupecký Award exhibition at Prague's DOX center featured five finalists under thirty-five. Jiří Skála emerged as the winner with an installation exploring text, archives, and communication modes through suspended letters, video works, and archival tags. His work addressed the artist's relationship to painting, literature, and photography, including videos where a man reads a dissident's diary and a woman listens indifferently to a love story. Other finalists included Tomáš Džadoň, who presented prefab apartment components reflecting his childhood in Eastern European housing; the duo Jiří Franta and David Böhm with their installation '58 years' incorporating abstract maps and hidden diary entries; Alena Kotzmanová, who displayed a life-size boat on the roof containing archival sea postcards; and Petra Herotová, who investigated two women sharing her name through video and diagrams. The award, recognizing long-term contributions to Czech art, sparked discussions about nominations and artistic approaches. Some works were criticized for ostentation or superficiality, while Skála's victory was largely accepted by the Czech art community as connecting conceptual tendencies from late modern to early postmodern art. The exhibition ran in 2009, with the review published on February 7, 2010.
