Jill Nathanson's Translucent Color-Field Paintings at Berry Campbell Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From January 7 to February 6, 2021, Jill Nathanson showcased her solo exhibition 'Light Phase' at the Berry Campbell gallery in New York City. With a career spanning over 20 solo exhibitions since her debut in 1982, she presented abstract paintings characterized by delicate, translucent layers of color. Nathanson employs transparent plastic sheets, known as 'modelli,' sourced from theatrical supply stores to create preparatory studies, which she then translates onto larger panels using specialized paints from Golden Artist Colors. Educated at Bennington College during the late 1970s and early 1980s, she received informal guidance from Kenneth Noland and Larry Poons, intentionally differentiating her style from that of Helen Frankenthaler. Featured pieces included 'Light Wrestle' (2020), 'Tan Transpose' (2020), and 'Light's Cover' (2019).
