Jewyo Rhii Wins 2019 Korea Artist Prize

award · 2026-04-24

Jewyo Rhii has been honored with the 2019 Korea Artist Prize, a collaborative effort between the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul and the SBS Culture Foundation. This award, aimed at promoting contemporary Korean artists, was determined by an international jury through a two-stage process. Initially, four artists—Rhii, Ayoung Kim, Hyesoo Park, and Young In Hong—were shortlisted, each receiving ₩40 million from SBS to develop new works for display at MMCA. The final decision was made based on these exhibitions. Rhii's project, Love Your Depot (2019), features a prototype storage space that integrates installation, video, performance, and contributions from other artists, exploring the future of art production and conservation. The jury consisted of MMCA director Youn Bummo, Bartomeu Marí, Ki Hyekyung, Dirk Snauwaert, and Hiromi Kurosawa. The exhibition will be on view at MMCA Seoul until 1 March 2020.
