Jewyo Rhii's Of Hundred Carts and On at Barakat Contemporary explores art storage as dynamic installation
Jewyo Rhii's exhibition Of Hundred Carts and On at Barakat Contemporary in Seoul, running from 31 August to 27 October, transforms storage systems into a living laboratory. The installation features shelving units and racks filled with paintings, sculptures, lightworks, videos, and texts, including works like Turn Depot (2021–23) on a mobile metal frame locked into a circular track. Rhii's signature approach, reminiscent of her earlier Love Your Depot (2019) first shown at MMCA Seoul for the Korean Artist Prize, questions what happens to artworks after exhibitions or those with no permanent home. The display includes white footballs with obscured brands, experimental plaster sculptures, Drawing Rack (2019–23) with clipped drawings, and Flavinesque neon tubes. A candelabra cactus covered in a blanket sits on a palette, while a large text titled 'Dear My Love – anti-capitalist' serves as both a love letter and commentary on the surrounding works. The installation echoes Haegue Yang's Storage Piece (2003), activating archival elements into a dynamic entity where each piece seems poised to tell a story, though muted by clutter. Rhii incorporates her own two decades of crated works alongside those of colleagues, emphasizing change and dialogue between materials and audiences.
