Jestico + Whiles to Restore Smithsons' Brutalist School in Hunstanton

Jestico + Whiles, an architecture firm based in London, has secured a project to renovate Smithdon High School, located in Hunstanton, Norfolk. This Grade II* listed brutalist structure was designed by Alison and Peter Smithson and first opened its doors in 1954 as Hunstanton School, marking one of the couple's early creations when they were just 21 and 26 years old. The renovation team comprises Arup, the original structural engineers from the 1950s, along with conservation experts Purcell, planning advisors DPP, and contractor Bowmer + Kirkland, under the supervision of Historic England and the Twentieth Century Society. The refurbishment will focus on restoring original materials and replacing damaged components, especially the façade, affected by the saline environment. The Smithsons incorporated innovative materials like steel, early double glazing, and precast planks, many of which are now hidden. The plan includes revealing the original plank structure and enhancing the building's design. Planning approval has been granted, with the project expected to finish in 2028, while the school will temporarily relocate at the end of the current academic year.
