Jessica Morgan Curates 10th Gwangju Biennale 'Burning Down the House' with 30+ Commissions

From September 5 to November 9, 2014, Jessica Morgan oversaw the 10th Gwangju Biennale titled 'Burning Down the House,' inspired by the Talking Heads' 1983 song. The exhibition showcases over 30 newly commissioned pieces, featuring artists such as Allora & Calzadilla and Sung Hwan Kim. It takes place in the Biennale Halls, with performances reaching into adjacent parks and involving more than 400 local participants. Each of the five galleries offers transitional experiences, showcasing works by Koo Jeong-a, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, and Pierre Huyghe. While the biennale reflects on Korea's current political landscape, it does not emphasize the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. Prominent artists include Jane Alexander, Lee Bul, and Minouk Lim. Morgan attempted to feature Picasso's 'Massacre in Korea' but was unable to do so.
