Jeremy Shaw's Phase Shifting Index Extended at Centre Pompidou
Jeremy Shaw's video installation Phase Shifting Index (2020) at Centre Pompidou in Paris has been extended and is now on view until July 27, 2020. The work features seven fictional communities living in the 22nd century but embodying characteristics of the late 20th century, each seeking transcendence through ritualistic practices. The communities include the Zero Ones, who use wooden sticks to create energy circuits; Cyclical Culture, focused on bodily transformation; Violet Lux, who walk in a circle and gesture concepts like Vision and Paradox; Alignment Movement, using perturbation and free energy theories to realign gravitational fields; Reclaimers, who meditate; Countdown, who perform aggressive movements based on 19th-century nihilistic theories; and Quantum Moderns, applying quantum mechanics to choreography. The videos are presented as archival material, blending science fiction and documentary styles with voiceovers in obscure language subtitled in French. The installation culminates in a synchronized sequence where all groups move in unison, suggesting a breakthrough to transcendence, before dissolving into pixels. The work reflects on the human condition and the search for unity, coinciding with the global pandemic year of 2020. The exhibition was originally scheduled until April but extended. The piece is courtesy of the artist and König Galerie, Berlin.
