Jeppe Hein's Kinetic Light Installation at Galerie Jan Mot

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Jeppe Hein's exhibition at Galerie Jan Mot in Brussels (November 4, 2009 – January 30, 2010) features a kinetic light installation titled "Hello! Shall I call you back?" The work consists of a garland of electric cables that moves via pulleys and a motor, creating shifting configurations from a miniature Eiffel Tower to octopus tentacles. A mirror on the opposite wall rotates in sync with the cables, drawing viewers into the space. In a second room, the gallery owner pedals a stationary bike, powering the installation through chains and rotating axes, revealing the manual labor behind the seemingly sophisticated technology. This hidden mechanism challenges viewers' initial perceptions of the work as merely a fairy-tale or kinetic piece. Hein, known for destabilizing viewers, forces reflection on hidden dimensions and false certainties. During his residency at Atelier Calder (September 2009 – January 2010), Hein developed "Circus Hein," inviting artists to create circus-related works including architectural projects, costumes, and performances. A presentation occurred at Atelier Calder in Saché on December 12–13, 2009, and an exhibition runs until April 4, 2010, at Frac Centre in Orléans. "Circus Hein" will continue to Open Space at Art Cologne in April 2010. Another exhibition is at La Box in Bourges from January 7–16, 2010.
