Jeppe Hein's Interactive Installations at CAPC Bordeaux
At CAPC Musée d'art contemporain in Bordeaux, Jeppe Hein presented three works from 2002: "360° Présence" (a large steel ball that moves around the viewer), "Néon Wall" (neon lights that turn on and off), and "Floating between top and bottom" (an air compressor agitating a hose). The exhibition ran from December 4, 2002, to January 19, 2003. Hein's practice centers on the viewer's presence as a trigger for the artwork, turning the gallery into a field of action. The works rely on detectors that make the spectator an essential but uncertain energy source. The encounter between viewer and work creates both distance and intimacy, avoiding a possessive user attitude. The piece "In between" (2002) reduces participation to simply taking time to watch a sheet of paper move almost imperceptibly within a frame. Didier Arnaudet wrote the accompanying text.
