Jennie Baptiste retrospective at Somerset House showcases three decades of Black British music culture photography

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Until January 4, Somerset House in London presents the most extensive exhibition of photographer Jennie Baptiste's work. Baptiste, born in 1971, captured the essence of London's Black British diaspora, focusing on fashion, music, and youth culture throughout the 1990s. The showcase features her series Brixton Boyz, which highlights the bonds among young Black men, alongside her ongoing Dancehall documentation. It also includes Black Chains of Icon, a significant piece from 1994 exploring Black identity. Starting her career at university, Baptiste's early work involved publications and volunteering for the Wembley and Brent Times. Influenced by Albert Watson and James Van Der Zee, she documented London's vibrant dancehall and hip-hop scenes, creating notable portraits of artists like Roots Manuva, Estelle, and Jay Z. The exhibition spans 30 years, tackling themes of representation and authenticity in photography.
