Jennet Thomas's Animal Condensed>Animal Expanded video trilogy explores technology, animal life, and identity at Tintype
From June 14 to July 14, 2018, Tintype in London presented the first two parts of a video trilogy by Jennet Thomas. The works, named Animal Condensed>Animal Expanded #1 (2016) and Animal Condensed>>Animal Expanded #2 (2018), explore the relationship between animals and technology through a surreal narrative. In the first part, a humanoid chicken speaks to a character called Authenticity Fetish in a digital space, expressing concern over how "Animal Expanded" impacts its true animal nature, while industrial chickens and CGI figures move along conveyor belts. The second part features an urban dad discussing how his family interacts with "Animal Condensed" for self-betterment, contrasting with his daughter who plays games with digital piglets on an iPad. Thomas's work connects everyday life to larger political and philosophical issues about materiality and virtual existence. The exhibition was highlighted in ArtReview's September 2018 issue.
