Jeff Williams' debut solo exhibition explores material vulnerability through chemical processes at Jack Hanley Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Jeff Williams showcased his inaugural solo exhibition, titled NEW/USED/WET/BROKEN, from November 15 to December 21, 2013, at the Jack Hanley Gallery in New York City. The Brooklyn and Austin-based artist displayed eight pieces that function as experiments in chemistry and physics, engaging with entropic processes. To hasten the deterioration of Oxidation Table, gallery personnel applied hydrogen peroxide daily. In the piece #13, a wine glass covered in liquid gallium dangles from an aluminum I-beam, highlighting gallium's ability to corrode. Another work, Cibolo Creek, features a blowtorch directed at a 60-million-year-old fossil from Texas, which Williams ignites during live performances. The exhibition also includes a twenty-foot steel column, floor sculptures, wall propositions, video, and a newsprint photo, all examining material fragility at the atomic scale.
