Jeff Mills performs live score for Fritz Lang's Metropolis at Cinema Massimo

On March 11, 2019, American DJ and producer Jeff Mills performed a live soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis at the Cinema Massimo in Turin, Italy. The event, titled Jeff Mills plays Metropolis, was organized in collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, which had hosted Mills a decade earlier for The Trip. Mills, known as The Wizard, has a long-standing interest in cinema and began working on a score for Metropolis in 2000, initially composing only a portion. After the 2010 restoration of the film by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation and the Deutsche Kinemathek, which recovered 25 minutes of lost footage in Argentina, Mills completed the score. The work premiered in 2017 at the Universum-Film Aktien Gesellschaft in Berlin and was brought to Italy by Seeyousound Festival director Maurizio Pisani. The performance lasted 155 minutes, matching the restored version of the film (restored by the Cineteca di Bologna). Mills' set blended organ, minimal sounds, and techno, creating a hypnotic climax. The event highlighted the enduring relevance of Metropolis, with themes of artificial intelligence, apocalyptic prophecy, populism, and witch hunts. Mills' precise synchronization with the film drew comparisons to original composer Gottfried Huppertz.
