Jeff Koons Endorses Hillary Clinton on Election Day
On the 2016 US Election Day, artist Jeff Koons publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton in an interview with Monopol, calling her a perfect candidate who has always supported the art world. Koons joins a wave of artists backing Clinton, including Carrie Mae Weems, Laura Parnes, Deborah Kass, Chuck Close, Barbara Kruger, and Cindy Sherman. Carey Dunne of Hyperallergic notes that no major artist has endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump. The art world's support stems from Clinton's record: she won the Americans for the Arts' National Arts Award in 1999 for her work as First Lady, launched the Save America's Treasures program to preserve historic monuments and artworks, and advocated for the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of Women's History, and the National Museum of the American Latino. Designer Michael Bierut of Pentagram created the campaign logo and pins with Paula Scher. Earlier, Jenny Holzer produced an animated pro-Clinton campaign, and Larry Gagosian held a fundraiser for the former Secretary of State. The design world also generated anti-Trump merchandise to engage younger voters.
