Jeff Koons Designs Special BMW M850i for Frieze Los Angeles
Jeff Koons has created a special edition of the BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe to celebrate 50 years of BMW's cultural engagement. The car will debut at Frieze Los Angeles in February 2022. This is Koons' second collaboration with BMW, following his 2010 M3 GT2 Art Car that raced at Le Mans. BMW's art program began in 1971 with a Gerhard Richter painting for its Munich headquarters. The BMW Art Cars series started in 1975 with Alexander Calder, continuing with Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol. The selection jury, composed of museum directors from five continents, chose artists like Olafur Eliasson and John Baldessari. The European premiere of the Koons car will be in Florence on February 21, 2022, at Palazzo Strozzi, where Koons received the "Palazzo Strozzi Renaissance Man of the Year Award 2021." BMW also supports La Scala, Fondazione Prada, and the La Milanesiana festival in Italy.
