Jeff Bark's First Italian Solo Show at Palazzo delle Esposizioni

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Jeff Bark, born in Minnesota in 1963, presents his first Italian solo exhibition, 'Paradise Garage,' at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. The show features over fifty unpublished photographs created entirely in the artist's garage in Upstate New York. Bark transforms the small space into a magical box, using grotesque characters, classicist sculptural reproductions, baroque fabrics, domestic objects, and dark forest vegetation to construct an interior vision of Rome—a city he has never fully known but imagined and reworked. The monumental photographs are staged with meticulous attention to detail, drawing on Bark's experience as a fashion photographer. Curator Alessio de’ Navasques connects Bark's work to esotericism and mythology, citing a symbolic turtle in the imagery. The artist's process is compared to Joseph Cornell's assemblage and Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, as well as Michelangelo Pistoletto's 'Venere degli stracci' and Neo-Dada practices. References to Flemish painting and Caravaggesque lighting enhance the postmodern, fashion-inflected aesthetic. De’ Navasques interprets the work as a mystical imaginary journey, a catharsis triggered by the myth of the Grand Tour, though Bark does not plan further Italian travels.
