Jean Tinguely retrospective at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan
Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan hosts the largest posthumous retrospective of Jean Tinguely in Italy, opening October 10, 2024 and running through February 2, 2025. The exhibition spans 5,000 square meters across the Navate, featuring works from the 1950s to the 1990s arranged not chronologically but by a musical-like criterion. Curated by Camille Morineau, Lucia Pesapane, Vicente Todolì, and Fiammetta Griccioli, the show is organized in collaboration with the Museo Tinguely in Basel and coincides with the centenary of the artist's birth in 2025. Tinguely (Fribourg, 1925 – Bern, 1991) is a pioneer of kinetic art and machine sculpture. The exhibition includes early métamécanique sculptures, monumental works like Gismo (1960), Requiem pour une feuille morte (1967), Plateau agriculturel (1978), Philosopher series (1988–89), and musical machines such as Méta-Maxi and Pit-Stop (1984) and Shuttlecock (1990). Tinguely's deep connection to Milan is highlighted, notably his 1970 performance La Vittoria in Piazza Duomo. The artist described himself as an artist of movement, using discarded objects and machines to explore themes of transience and social change.
