Jean Shin's Earthwork 'Offering' and 'Celadon Landscape' at Green-Wood Cemetery

exhibition · 2026-04-20

On April 18, 2026, Jean Shin presented 'Offering' at Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, paying tribute to two fallen oak trees through a burial mound inspired by traditional Korean tumuli. This installation turns the process of decomposition into a vibrant memorial that enhances soil and fosters ecosystems. Collaborating with gravediggers, Shin created a hundred-foot trench to inter the trees along with their leaves and branches. During a press preview on April 16, a community ritual led by Korean shaman Mudang Jenn included the planting of wildflowers. Commissioned by Harry Weil of Green-Wood, this installation coincides with the reopening of the historic Weir Greenhouse, which underwent a $43 million restoration and now functions as a visitor center showcasing Shin's 'Celadon Landscape' (2015–2019) until January 2027.
