Jean Shin's Celadon Landscape at Green-Wood Cemetery

exhibition · 2026-05-06

Artist Jean Shin's installation 'Celadon Landscape' is now on view at The Green-House, the newly opened visitor and exhibition center at The Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. The work is assembled from nearly two tons of broken Korean ceramic shards discarded by artisans and kilns in Icheon, South Korea. Originally conceived in 2015, this is the first indoor iteration of the piece. Shin transforms the fragments into monumental mosaic vessels, with visible seams intentionally left unresolved to emphasize repair as an ongoing collective act. The installation also includes a participatory component where visitors write names of loved ones on torn mulberry paper, which Shin collages onto a growing scroll. 'Celadon Landscape' runs from April 18, 2026, to January 17, 2027, and inaugurates the Green-House, built around the restored 1895 Weir Greenhouse. The space hosts exhibitions, research, and public programs focused on memory and ecology. Shin's outdoor earthwork 'Offering' is also on long-term view in the cemetery's entrance meadow.
