Jean-Pierre Thibaudat's Journey Through Russia's Resistant Cultures

publication · 2026-04-23

In his book "Rien ne sera plus jamais calme à la frontière finno-chinoise," Jean-Pierre Thibaudat challenges the stereotype of Russian passivity, portraying a people whose resistance is rooted in patience, not passivity. The travelogue spans from Komsomolsk-sur-Amour to Vladivostok, blending geographical and inner journeys. Thibaudat explores theater, literature, cuisine, songs, proverbs, and myths, highlighting the dignity and resilience of ordinary Russians facing slow oppression—unfulfilled promises, unpaid wages, and ignored pleas. He visits Astrakhan, home to one of Russia's oldest theaters; Elista, whose population was deported by Stalin; Lake Baikal, revered as a sea and father figure; Tomsk and Nurba, an isolated town with a 140-seat theater staging Russian and Yakut plays; Blagovechtchens; Komsomolsk-sur-Amour, likened to Pompeii; Vladivostok; and Ufa, where a dam project condemned by Greenpeace continues. Thibaudat also notes the paradox of a museum in Nurba honoring both oppressors and oppressed, and the Russian leadership's preference for Lenin's embalmed body over acknowledging past horrors. The book is dedicated to Arthur and Lou, who "will never quite return" from their journey. Thibaudat's immersion in diverse cultures—Nanai, Chukchi, shamanic art, and languages—is evident. He cites Charles Weinstein, a linguist compiling a French-Chukchi dictionary. The work is published by Christian Bourgois.
