Jean Nouvel's R4 art complex on Île Seguin changes hands, cultural future uncertain

The R4 project on Île Seguin near Paris, designed by Jean Nouvel, has changed ownership from EuroAsia to Emerige Group and its financial partner AOG. The 150-million-euro complex, spanning 19,300 square meters over eight floors plus a rooftop terrace, was envisioned to include exhibition space, a sculpture park, performing arts venue, offices, an auction house, private galleries, and storage. While the new owners affirm the cultural vocation will remain intact, details are still under discussion, according to the Journal Des Arts. This marks another setback for Nouvel, following the contested Tours Duo towers and the rejection of his Geneva Museum of Art and History extension in a public referendum where 54% voted against. The project's history includes earlier plans by François Pinault, who in 2000-2001 commissioned Tadao Ando to build his private museum on the same site before moving it to Punta della Dogana due to bureaucratic and technical hurdles.
