Jean-Michel Othoniel's 'Bleus Lacets' inaugurates The Monaco Project for the Arts

exhibition · 2026-04-23

At Monaco's École supérieure d'arts plastiques, Jean-Michel Othoniel presents 'Bleus Lacets', a new sculpture of two interpenetrating necklaces on a wave-like base, marking a shift toward more classical, sculptural work. The exhibition, the first organized by The Monaco Project for the Arts, showcases pieces from the last seven years, revealing an evolution toward abstraction in material, color, and spatial integration. Othoniel notes his work is becoming purer, returning to earlier influences, and that the necklace now adapts to its environment, posing questions of movement and the absent body. Sacred references persist, with nods to Malevich's 'abstract icons', Fontana's Spatial Concepts, and Mondrian's view of nature. The association, founded by collector Rita Caltagirone, will transform the school into a summer exhibition space for international artists, funding shows, producing site-specific works, and publishing monographs with Actes Sud. Othoniel also committed to working with students, having designed his website through this intergenerational collaboration.
