Jean-Marc Bustamante to Open Foundation in Arles in 2026

French artist Jean-Marc Bustamante will open the Fondation Bustamante in Arles in summer 2026. The foundation will be housed in the 12th-century Romanesque Église Sainte-Croix, renovated by architect and designer Charles Zana with Eric Perez, who previously oversaw the construction of the LUMA Tower. The three-story space will include five exhibition rooms, a library, a boutique with limited artist editions, and a café. Directed by Bustamante himself, the foundation aims to preserve and make accessible his body of work, host temporary exhibitions by emerging and established artists, and offer training programs and masterclasses for young creatives in collaboration with guest artists. Bustamante has deep ties to Arles: in 1973 he was among the first artists to participate in the Rencontres d'Arles and held his first solo show at the Musée Réattu that same year. He represented France at the São Paulo Biennial in 1994 and the Venice Biennale in 2003, and participated in three editions of Documenta in Kassel (1987, 1992, 1997). He also served as director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 2015 to 2018. Arles mayor Patrick de Carolis welcomed the initiative, noting that the city already hosts LUMA Arles, the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh, and the Fondation Lee Ufan.
