Jean-Marc Bustamante appointed director of Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, replacing Nicolas Bourriaud

institutional · 2026-04-20

On 3 September 2015, Le Monde reported that French culture minister Fleur Pellerin has put forward artist Jean-Marc Bustamante as the new head of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. This nomination comes after Pellerin's contentious removal of former director Nicolas Bourriaud in early July 2015. Bustamante has a rich background in academia, having been a faculty member at the institution since 1996 and teaching at the Fine Art Academy in Munich since 2008. He also led the 'Printemps de Septembre' biennial art festival in Toulouse from 2012 to 2015. His career has not been without controversy, notably for remarks in 2006 that drew criticism from feminists, including novelist Marie Darrieussecq, who contributed to ArtReview. This decision signifies a notable change for the esteemed Parisian art school.
