Jean Lurçat's Monumental 'Le Chant du monde' Returns to Aubusson

The Cité internationale de la tapisserie in Aubusson is hosting a complete exhibition of Jean Lurçat's monumental tapestry cycle 'Le Chant du monde' from April 4 to November 1, 2026. This marks the first time the ten-piece ensemble, spanning 350 square meters, is shown in its entirety in Aubusson, where Lurçat had deep ties. Created between 1957 and 1966, 'Le Chant du monde' reflects Lurçat's post-war vision, addressing themes from the Hiroshima bombing to the space race, with a humanist perspective. Lurçat, who initially painted, turned to tapestry in the 1930s after encouragement from collector Marie Cuttoli, who had his works translated into tapestry. He developed a unique cosmic visual language, notably in 'L'Apocalypse' (1947–1950), and helped revive Aubusson's tapestry industry by reviving medieval techniques. After World War II, he collaborated with the Mobilier national and other prestigious institutions. The current exhibition, held at the Cité internationale de la tapisserie (Rue des Arts, 23200 Aubusson), is featured in Beaux Arts Magazine's summer double issue. The tapestries are usually kept in Angers, and this is a rare opportunity to see the complete cycle. The exhibition underscores Lurçat's legacy as a pioneer of modern tapestry and his enduring influence on the art form.
