Jean-Jacques Lebel's Black Ink Drawings at Galerie Louis Carré

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From March 22 to April 28, 2007, Jean-Jacques Lebel showcased fifty new black ink drawings at Galerie Louis Carré in Paris. These pieces, characterized by obsessive forms, represent a departure from his previous Venus-themed creations, such as the Reliquaire pour un culte de Vénus, which has been displayed at multiple locations. His 2004 exhibition featured three large installations and approximately one hundred figures of Venus. The spring 2007 film "Les Avatars de Vénus" wrapped up this series, merging visuals from medieval sculptures to works by Picasso. One of the drawings includes a heart-like shape and silhouettes reminiscent of Titian's Venus of Urbino. In an interview, Lebel discusses Duchamp's impact and shares his ambition to build a new Statue of Liberty in the Jardin du Luxembourg.
