Jean-Jacques Aillagon on Versailles Contemporary Art Program: Murakami in 2010

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In a conversation with artpress, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, who was the president of the Château de Versailles at the time, elaborated on the contemporary art initiative. The exhibition by Xavier Veilhan was on display until December 13, 2009, followed by Takashi Murakami’s showcase in spring 2010, organized in collaboration with Qatar. Aillagon mentioned that Veilhan was selected after the contentious 2008 exhibition by Jeff Koons. The venue alternates between showcasing foreign and French artists to highlight the latter. Unlike Koons, Veilhan produced new pieces specifically for the location. Funding came from partners such as Cnap and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin. Aillagon emphasized the necessity of gallery backing for artists and expressed enthusiasm for potential exhibitions featuring Maurizio Cattelan. Richard Leydier conducted the interview.
