Jean-François Chevrier's Writings on Photography Collected in Seven-Volume Set

publication · 2026-04-23

Éditions l'Arachnéen has released the initial three installments of a seven-volume series showcasing the writings of Jean-François Chevrier, a French curator and educator at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. This collection features nearly twenty essays, forty texts, and five interviews, filling a notable void in accessible literature on his ideas. The first volume, "La Trame et le hasard," delves into the subconscious impacts of modernism. The second volume, "Entre les beaux-arts et les médias : photographie et art moderne," reexamines Chevrier's advocacy for contemporary photography, incorporating revised texts from his exhibitions "Une autre objectivité" (1989) and "Photo-Kunst" (1991). The third volume, "Walker Evans dans le temps et dans l'histoire," critiques Evans's "American Photographs" (1938) and his exhibition at MoMA. The remaining volumes are anticipated in 2011.
